Arsenal transfer target Lautaro Martinez want’s to leave Inter Milan with his eye set on a move to Arsenal
Arsenal is reportedly considering an optimistic move for Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez this summer.
Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez has recently been linked with a summer move to Arsenal, who are said to be keeping tabs on the 23-year-old ahead of the new campaign. The Gunners are on the lookout for additional reinforcements at the top of the pitch as Mikel Arteta looks to improve on last season’s eighth-placed Premier League finish.
The Arsenal manager’s desire to land a striker has likely been influenced by the uncertainty surrounding the future of Alexandre Lacazette, who will be out of contract next summer.
The Frenchman played an important role for the north Londoners throughout the previous campaign, chipping in with 17 goals in all competitions.
However, his current situation leaves the club with a dilemma over whether to cash in now or risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season.
Martinez is believed to be one of several possible replacements under the microscope at the Emirates Stadium, with Chelsea outcast Tammy Abraham, who finished as his side’s joint-top scorer last time around, also said to be on Arteta’s shortlist.
A move for the former would represent a bold statement of intent from the Gunners, with Inter open to selling if their £77million valuation is met, according to The Telegraph.
The Argentina international has established himself as one of the world’s finest attackers as of late, clinching the Serie A title with his club last season before excelling on the international stage to help Argentina lift the Copa America earlier this month.
Martinez previously earned high praise from none other than Barcelona icon and team-mate Lionel Messi, who described him as the ‘complete’ striker in February of last year.
“He is spectacular,” Messi told Mundo Deportivo. “He has impressive qualities, you could always see that he would have become a great player.
“Now he has exploded and he is showing it. He is very strong, he is great in one-on-ones, he scores many goals in the box, he keeps the ball well and has a lot of quality. He is a complete player.”
Messi’s comments were made in light of rumours suggesting that Barcelona were considering a move for Martinez to improve their options in attack.
However, when the latter’s agent Yaque was quizzed on the verdict issued by Messi at the time, his response hinted at a desire for the Inter man to see out the remainder of his contract, which is set to expire in the summer of 2023.
“Surely for Lauty, it is a great compliment from the best in the world,” said Yaque, also speaking to Mundo Deportivo.
“I think that is very nice and comforting for him. He wears it as if nothing.
“Because he is only focused on his club, but surely with great satisfaction knowing that he is doing things very well for all this.
“Lautaro has a five-year contract with Inter and the news that comes out are excluded from the press.”
Barcelona has been linked with Martinez’s services once again this summer, and it remains to be seen whether they will look to nip ahead of Arsenal and bring the forward to La Liga.
The Gunners may attempt to reduce Inter’s reported asking price by offering a player-plus-cash deal, with Hector Bellerin said to be among the names under consideration.
