Mikel Arteta and Edu begin scouting mission to seal deal for top rated Portuguese talent
The summer transfer window promises to be a busy one for Arsenal. The three areas Arteta and technical director Edu are looking to strengthen in are right back, central midfield and in attack. Despite not being able to make any signings for another three months, the rumour mill is already in overdrive.
From Tyler Adams, Youri Tielemans and Fabian Ruiz to Joao Felix and Jonathan David, a host of names have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium. Luckily for Arteta most reported targets will be in action for their respective national teams thus providing a chance for some extra scouting.
Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a summer deal for Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix. Mikel Arteta knows his side need a world-class striker at the end of the campaign having failed to replace the goals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. And the Portugal international would certainly represent an upgrade.
With the striker situation the most pressing ahead of next season, taking a closer look at Joao Felix might be high on Arteta’s to-do list as the Atletico Madrid wonderkid will be in a big pressure situation when Portugal face Turkey in a World Cup qualification semi-final on Thursday.
Felix hasn’t always convinced at Atletico since arriving from Benfica back in the summer transfer window of 2019.
Yet the Portugal international is still regarded as a talent for the future.
Felix impressed against Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday night, heading his side in front in Spain.
And Arsenal are rumoured to be eyeing a deal for the youngster at the end of the campaign with Arteta eager to bolster his frontline.
Felix could function as a lone no.9 for the Gunners, with Mikel Arteta looking to mould him into the complete striker he seeks for his team, or play on the left with Gabriel Martinelli tasked with leading the line. Arteta has also played with a 4-2-3-1 – and Felix could play as a no.10.
Atletico aren’t likely to sell the 22-year-old without a big bid coming in, however. Felix is under contract until 2026 and Arsenal would have to pay a substantial fee in order to prise the player away from Spain.
