Tottenham Hotspur outcast could leave this winter

In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, transfer insider Dean Jones stated that Tottenham Hotspur outcast Djed Spence could leave on loan this January. Jones said,

“If Djed Spence is going to break through, he’s got to earn it.

“It might be the Carabao Cup is his platform but, ultimately, I think this season’s going to be a tough one for him to make a name for himself in that Tottenham team.

“It might even be that he has loan enquiries when we get to January.”

Spence’s Impressive Form In English Football Last Season

Spence has struggled to make an impact at the North London club since arriving from Middlesbrough earlier this year. He has only made one appearance for Spurs this season as a late-game substitute against Nottingham Forest.

The 22-year-old had a decent campaign with Middlesbrough in the EFL Championship last season when he made 42 league appearances for them, finding the back of the net twice and earning five assists in the process.

Spence was productive at both ends of the field as he averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 0.6 shots, 1.0 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in the English Championship. He was even tidy when distributing possession from the right-back position based on his pass success rate of 76.1% in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).

Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Antonio Conte Let Spence Go Out On Loan This January?

Spence is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn the ball back on the defensive end of the field. He usually clears the danger when needed and can make some encouraging runs with the ball down the right flank. Spence is primarily a right-back but can also play as a right-sided wide player if needed.

The English full-back can even engineer some meaningful chances for his teammates in the final third. However, he has so far struggled to settle into life at Tottenham.

Thus, it makes a lot of sense for Spurs head coach Antonio Conte to let Spence go out on loan in order to gain more experience this season. At 22, he is still quite raw and would need time to adapt to the physicality and high intensity of Premier League football.

With all things considered, the North London club should think about sending Spence out on loan so that he can come back as a better version of himself next summer.
